Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Department of Art & Art History offers numerous scholarships to students working on a BA in art history or a BFA in studio art. All full-time continuing art and art history majors, incoming, and transfer students currently enrolled at the University of Utah may apply for the following: Carmen Morton Christensen, Grace Durkee Meldrum, Jack and Florence Sears, Thomas and Susan Rugh, Florence Ware, Leone S. McGowan Memorial, and the Departmental scholarships. Please follow the instructions below to apply for these awards. The Ethel E. Rolapp, E.J. Bird, and Howard Clark scholarships are also available to students, but by faculty invitation only.

Note: You must be accepted to the University of Utah, be an Art Major, and have a UNID to apply for Department of Art & Art History scholarships.

Art History Scholarships

For the Art History Scholarship, you must be an Art History major with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and completed nine credit hours of Art History courses. To apply, please go to the University of Utah's scholarships management site (button above), fill out the General Application, and search for Art History Undergraduate Scholarships in the Opportunities panel. When in the Art History Scholarships opportunity, you need to provide a 250-word statement of academic interest and goals.

If you receive an award, you will be notified via your Umail. You can also check by logging back into the University of Utah scholarship management site. You must accept your award and submit thank you letters through the scholarship portal by May.

Studio Art Scholarships

The University of Utah's scholarships management site handles all scholarships. You can apply for all available departmental scholarships with one application. During the submission process, you will be required to upload your portfolio as a single PDF. The details for creating the PDF are listed below and on the application website.

Please go to the University of Utah's scholarships management site (button above) to fill out the general application. After doing so, search through the Opportunities and apply for the Studio Art Scholarships. This is where you will be asked to upload your portfolio and answer a few additional questions.

If you receive an award, you will be notified via your Umail. You can also check by logging back into the University of Utah scholarship management site. You must accept your award and submit thank you letters through the scholarship portal by May.

Portfolio Instructions

You will need to create high-quality images for your portfolio PDF.

  • Upload a single PDF file, and the maximum size cannot exceed 10 MB. (You may need to adjust your images in Photoshop before creating the PDF).
  • Your portfolio should contain from 7 to 10 works.
  • Post one work per page with a maximum of 2 images per page. For example, you might have a full view and then a detail on the same page. Use multiple pages if more views are necessary to understand the piece.
  • Add a text description at the bottom of each page with the following information: Title, Dimensions, Medium, Date completed (the year is sufficient)
  • If you are submitting videos or sound files, you must first upload them to a website such as Box, Google Drive, DropBox, OneDrive, Vimeo, or YouTube. Once the file is hosted, please provide the URL in the PDF. You will also provide the URL when filling out the scholarship application.
  • Art Teaching Students: Portfolios can include your art, examples of lesson plans, or documentation of art and art making from school or community settings where you have taught. The submitted materials should not exceed 7-10 works.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

College of Fine Arts Scholarships and Grants

  • Please check for CFA scholarship information by visiting their website.
  • Fine Arts Fees (FAF) Grants: Any College of Fine Arts student group registered with ASUU or SAC registered through the College of Fine Arts may apply for funding from the Fine Arts Fees Grants Funding Committee for student-driven, noncredit activities, up to $6,000 annually.
  • CFA Travel Grants: This travel fund supports individual undergraduate or graduate students presenting or performing their scholarly or creative research at national or international venues. Each applicant has a limit of $750 International/$500 National per academic year, and funds will be disbursed on a first-come basis.

Grants and other opportunities from across campus

The University of Utah offers students numerous opportunities through grants and research initiatives to help fund your education.

  • Center for Student Access & Resources: They provide numerous scholarship opportunities for minority or underserved communities, single parents, non-traditional students, or students with other circumstances.
  • Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF): The SCIF is the University of Utah's green grant program. Students from all disciplines and departments are invited to propose projects that enhance the sustainability of our campus and community.
  • Office of Undergraduate Research: They provide numerous funding opportunities to undergraduate students.
    • Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP): The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program allows undergraduate students and faculty members to work together on research or creative projects. UROP provides assistantships up to $1,200 for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project on their own under the supervision of a faculty member.
    • Office of Undergraduate Research Travel & Small Grants: Provides funding opportunities for each undergraduate student whose research requires travel or other support. Small grants up to $200 and travel grants up to $500 are considered monthly.
  • ASUU Travel Funding: Currently enrolled students of the University of Utah can request up to $600 towards certain travel-related expenses.
  • ASUU Emergency Student Loan: The ASUU Student Resources Board offers small (up to $500) ninety-day emergency loans to students in need.
  • Bonderman Field Station at Rio Mesa: Funding opportunities for creative research through Undergraduate Fellowships up to $1,000 each. The University of Utah's Rio Mesa Center is an outdoor laboratory along the Dolores River in southeastern Utah, eight miles upstream from its junction with the Colorado River. The center's mission is to promote and inspire scholarly work, learning, and academic-community partnerships on various topics related to the Colorado Plateau ecosystems.
  • Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute Get Seeded Program: Need a seed grant to get your idea off the ground? Monthly Get Seeded events are student-run pitch events for aspiring student entrepreneurs.
